Marriott Bonvoy elite members appreciate 2 things, among many, about the Marriott Bonvoy program — the hotels’ global footprint and unique properties. Knowing that you can find a hotel no matter where you travel brings peace of mind for leisure and business travelers alike.

With Marriott Bonvoy’s global footprint, it’s also much easier for members to work their way up the elite status ladder. That’s great news for travelers! As you move to higher elite tiers, you unlock valuable benefits that make it worth the investment of both your money and time.

In this Marriott Bonvoy elite article, we’ll go into detail on all of the tiers and benefits of its loyalty program. You’ll see what benefits and perks are in each tier, which will help you to determine what elite tier you should aim to earn.

Silver Elite is the lowest elite tier in the Marriott Bonvoy program. This status can be earned in 2 ways. The first way is to stay 10 nights in a calendar year. The second way is to hold one of these Marriott Bonvoy-branded credit cards:

Late Checkout

Subject to availability, Silver Elite members can call the front desk on the day of departure to request a late checkout. Note that late checkout is not guaranteed, unlike what you’ll see in higher Marriott elite tiers.

10% Bonus Points

As a Silver Elite, you’ll earn 10% more points than regular members. This equates to 1 additional point per dollar spent at all properties except for Element, Residence Inn, and Townplace Suites where you’ll earn 0.5 additional points.

Elite Reservation Line

A dedicated elite reservation line is offered to Silver Elite members.

Bottom Line: The benefits are fairly limited to travelers who earn Silver Elite status. Assuming there’s availability, however, a late checkout will come in handy during your travel.

The second elite tier in the Marriott Bonvoy program is called Gold Elite. This status is earned in a few ways:

Hot Tip: Currently, the elite nights offered on the Marriott Bonvoy co-branded credit cards are stackable. This means that if you have both a personal and business Marriott Bonvoy-branded card, you’ll receive 30-40 elite night credits for the calendar year.

Gold Elite members receive the same benefits as Silver Elites, along with the following additional unique benefits:

Enhanced Room Upgrade

Space-available upgrades are one of the top perks of Gold Elite status. Members who earn this status are eligible for an upgrade to an enhanced room (i.e. rooms with special amenities), excluding suites.

25% Bonus Points on Stays

Members earn 25% more points than regular members on stays. At most hotels, this equates to 2.5 additional points per dollar spent.

2 P.M. Late Checkout

Subject to availability, Gold Elites receive a 2 p.m. late checkout. Note that this is different than what Silver Elite members receive as the checkout time is clearly stated as 2 p.m.

Welcome Gift of Points

You’ll receive 250 or 500 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points for your stay. The number of points that a member receives will vary by brand.

Bottom Line: Room upgrades are what we’ve found to be the top perk of Gold Elite status. Upgrades are subject to availability, however, an important point to keep in mind when booking your hotel stay.

Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite

The third elite tier in the Marriott Bonvoy program is called Platinum Elite. You’ll need to stay 50 nights in a calendar year to earn this status, or you can hold the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card.

Platinum Elite status can also be earned from credit card spend.

  • Spending $75,000 in a cardmember year on the Ritz-Carlton card (no longer open to new applicants)

In addition to the benefits from the Silver Elite and Gold Elite levels, the Platinum Elite level comes with several exclusive perks:

Enhanced Room Upgrade

Like Gold Elite status, Platinum Elite status comes with enhanced room upgrades as a perk. The key difference with Platinum Elite is that select suites, subject to availability, are included.

Hot Tip: Ritz-Carlton suites are excluded, as well as Aloft, Element, Marriott Grand Residence Club, and participating Vistana properties.

Welcome Gift Choice

An on-site amenity, breakfast, or points are offered during your stay. See 4.3.c. Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite Membership Benefits iii for a full breakdown of the welcome gift offered at each property.

50% Bonus Points on Stays

50% bonus points or 5 additional points per dollar spent is what Platinum Elite members earn at most brands.

Annual Gift Choice

Platinum Elite members get to choose between 5 suite night awards, the gift of Silver Elite status, 40% off your favorite hotel bed, 5 elite night credits, or a $100 charity donation. We’ve found high success in redeeming the suite nights, though you’re not guaranteed a suite when you choose to use this award.

Lounge Access

Full access to brands with a lounge and complimentary breakfast is included in the Lounge Access perk, an easy option to save a ton of money on food. Autograph Collection, Delta Hotels, JW Marriott, Le Meridien, Marriott, Renaissance, Sheraton, and Westin properties guarantee lounge access. For properties without a lounge, you’re offered breakfast in the hotel restaurant or 750 points.

4 P.M. Late Checkout

A 4 p.m. guaranteed late checkout is a benefit for Platinum Elites to use. Late checkout is subject to availability at resorts, convention hotels, and Design Hotels. 4 p.m. late checkout is not available at Marriott Grand Residence Club, Marriott Vacation Club, or participating Vistana properties.

Guaranteed Room Type

Room/bed preferences are guaranteed when making a reservation. If the hotel is unable to meet your preference request, compensation varies between $25-$100.

Bottom Line: Enhanced room upgrades, including suites, is one of the top perks of Platinum Elite status. Do not expect every property to honor this perk, though it’s nice to have the benefit in writing.

Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite

The second to the highest elite Marriott Bonvoy elite tier is Titanium Elite. It’s earned after staying 75 nights in a calendar year. Members are not able to earn Titanium Elite status by holding or spending on select credit cards.

Members receive all of the same benefits as Silver, Gold, and Platinum Elite with a few choice additions:

Enhanced Room Upgrade

Like Platinum Elite members, Titanium Elite members receive enhanced room upgrades, including suites. The difference here is that Ritz-Carlton properties are included. Aloft, Element, Marriott Grand Residence Club, Marriott Vacation Club, and Vistana properties are excluded.

75% Bonus Points on Stays

Titanium Elites earn an additional 75% bonus points on stays. This equates to 7.5 more points per dollar spent than members with no status.

Additional Annual Choice Benefit

A second selection of the following is offered to Titanium Elites: 5 suite night awards, 1 free award night (valid at properties requiring up to 40,000 points/night), the gift of Gold Elite status, 40% off of your favorite hotel brand bed, 5 elite night credits, or a $100 charity donation.

Hot Tip: A free award night at a property requiring up to 40,000 points per night can be an interesting benefit to choose. The 5 suite night awards or the 1 free award night are likely to provide the most value.

United Silver Premier Status

Silver Premier status is complimentary for Titanium Elite members. The more frequently you utilize this status, the more value it can provide.

48-Hour Guarantee

When a Titanium Elite makes a reservation by 3 p.m., 48 hours before arrival, the property will guarantee you a room.

Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Elite

Ambassador Elite is the crème de la crème of the Marriott Bonvoy program. Marriott Bonvoy requires members to not only stay 100 nights in a calendar year but also have $20,000 in qualifying spending.

Ambassador Elite members receive the same benefits as all lower tiers along with 2 top tier features:

Ambassador Service

As a reward for your loyalty, Marriott Bonvoy provides you with personal assistance with your stays. Ambassadors handle your every travel need from reservations to special requests.

Your24

A second unique benefit, in addition to Ambassador Service, is Your24. This benefit allows members to choose their 24-hour check-in and checkout time. Your24 times are subject to availability so keep this in mind when making a reservation

Final Thoughts

Marriott Bonvoy has quite a number of elite tiers — 5 to be exact. Each elite tier offers benefits and perks that meet the needs of a variety of travelers.

Unlike the World of Hyatt program, Marriott Bonvoy has a massive global footprint. No matter where you travel in the world, you’ll likely find a Marriott Bonvoy property. This is appealing for travelers whose travels take them to many different cities and countries.

We’ve held Marriott Bonvoy elite status for several years and can attest to the ups and downs of the program. Are there unique properties across the world and elite benefits that come in handy? You bet! Does Marriott Bonvoy require a ton of points for select properties and play with room availability? We don’t think there’s any doubt.

About Michael McHugh

Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Michael took his first international trip in 2013 with friends to the Bahamas. Although he didn’t travel much in his younger years, on that trip, he caught the travel bug and has been hooked ever since.

Michael first caught wind of the points and miles game in 2014 while at a bar in Washington, DC where the conversation amongst friends was quickly derailed because of an alert on a friend’s phone about a mistake fare.  That’s where the love affair with points and miles began.
