Rules for IHG One Rewards Free Night Certificates

There are a few rules you’ll want to be aware of when it comes to redeeming your IHG One Rewards free night certificate:

  • Free night certificates that come with the legacy IHG Select card are capped at 40,000 points, so a night at any hotel you’re hoping to book with must be priced at 40,000 points or less.
  • Certificates from the new IHG Premier card and IHG Premier Business card can be combined with points to book a more expensive property.
  • A certificate does not count towards fourth-night free bookings.
  • You cannot book multiple nights that add up to 40,000 points; free night certificates are valid for 1 night only.
  • You cannot use your IHG One Rewards free night for a stay in the future that is past the certificate’s expiration date.

IHG One Rewards’ Dynamic Pricing Model

One key thing to be mindful of is that IHG One Rewards uses a dynamic pricing model for its hotels, as opposed to a standard award chart with pre-determined rates. This means that the number of points you’ll need for a free night will vary based on the current cash rate for the property.

While this means that it is technically possible for any property to be listed below 40,000 points in order to use your free night certificate, the reality is that many of the very best IHG hotels will never be priced that low because the cash rates remain high year-round.

Of course, this lack of transparency can make it difficult to plan ahead, or to locate the best hotels that will provide big-time value for your free night certificate — but that is what you have Upgraded Points for!

For this post, we scoured the IHG portfolio for the very best hotels that stay within that 40,000-point maximum so you can use the free night certificate without having to dip into your points balance to increase the value of the certificate — let’s take a look at our favorites!

Honorable Mention

Anywhere That Adds Convenience to Your Life

It can be easy to get caught up in trying to maximize your free night certificate by redeeming it at an excellent hotel in an expensive city that otherwise would have cost you hundreds of dollars if you were paying cash. But as we know, perfect is the enemy of good and sometimes it is not always feasible to maximize your free night certificate to its fullest potential each year.

Given that, anytime you are able to use a free night certificate that both still saves you some cash and makes your life easier, well, that is a win in our book!

Final Thoughts

As you can see, there are dozens of great hotels, both internationally and within the U.S., where you can get great value out of your IHG One Rewards free night certificate each year. Since IHG One Rewards has a dynamic pricing model, the number of points required for a free night at any of these hotels can vary pretty dramatically based on the cash cost of the stay, so it is best to be as flexible as possible when trying to use your free night certificate at these properties.

Of course, as we stated in our honorable mention, you don’t always have to get massive value out of your free night certificate. After all, when you consider that you receive the certificate after paying your card’s $89 annual fee, redeeming it at any hotel that costs more than $99 a night (which is virtually every hotel) means you came out ahead!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you earn an IHG free night certificate?

You’ll earn 1 IHG One Rewards free night certificate each year that you hold and pay the annual fee on the $49 per year IHG Select card (this card is no longer available to new applicants), the $99 per year IHG Premier card, or the $99 IHG Premier Business card.

Are there limits to an IHG free night certificate?

Yes, your IHG One Rewards free night certificate can only be redeemed at hotels that cost up to 40,000 IHG One Rewards points per night, however certificates from the new credit cards can be combined with points for a more expensive redemption.

Can you combine an IHG free night certificate with points?

Ye, you can combine points with your IHG One Rewards free night certificate to book a night at a hotel that costs more than 40,000 points per night.

Does IHG have an award chart?

No, IHG One Rewards does not have an award chart and instead used a dynamic pricing model. This means the number of points required for a free night depends heavily on the cash rate of the night you are hoping to book.

This can cause both run-of-the-mill properties to cost more than 40,000 points per night and luxury properties to cost less than 40,000 points per night, based on the demand for rooms at the hotel.

With that, if you’re hoping to use your free night certificate at as nice of a property as possible, you’ll want to be as flexible as you can when it comes to booking. Generally speaking, you’ll have the most luck looking for lower-demand days in the middle of the week or outside of peak tourist season for the city you are visiting.

Can IHG free night certificates be booked for someone else?

Yes, you can definitely use your IHG One Rewards free night certificate to book an award for someone else. Simply add the name of the person you are booking for to the reservation, then call the hotel in advance and let them know of the arrangement.
