Points and miles are sweet, but you know what’s even sweeter? Especially in the morning and possibly dunked into a steaming hot cup of coffee?

That’s right, doughnuts.

But you no longer have to choose between infusing points and miles into every aspect of your life and shortening your lifespan with sugar-laden, fat-fried rings of mass-produced dough: American Express has refreshed its American Express® Gold Card benefits to now include a credit of up to $7 a month for Dunkin’ purchases. (That’s up to $84 a year.)

We’ll tell you how it works and how to enroll — you’ll be dropping r’s like a Southie from Boston.

American Express Membership Rewards

The Amex Gold card is one of our top choices for everyday spending with bonuses like:

  • 4x points at restaurants, including takeout and delivery in the U.S. (up to $50,000 per calendar year)
  • 4x points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 per calendar year)
  • 3x points on flights purchased directly with the airline or at AmexTravel.com
  • 1x points on all other purchases

Think of it this way: Earning 4x points is the equivalent of an 8.8% return on spending. We’re basing that figure on our valuations of Amex Membership Rewards points, which are currently worth 2.2 cents apiece.

Plus, the Amex Gold card has other statement credits besides the Dunkin’ credit, which, hold your horses, we’ll get to in a bit:

  • Up to $120 in Uber Cash — Receive up to $120 annually (up to $10 per month) in Uber Cash for rides or Uber Eats orders within the U.S. The Amex Gold card must be added to the Uber app to receive the Uber Cash benefit.
  • Up to $120 in Dining Credits — Receive up to $120 annually (up to $10 per month) in dining credits to use at participating dining partners, including Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, and Five Guys. Enrollment required.
  • Up to $100 in Resy Credit — Receive up to $100 annually (2 semiannual credits of up to $50) redeemable at any U.S. Resy restaurant and other eligible Resy purchases. Enrollment required.
Hot Tip:

To maximize dining credits, Amazon Prime users can get a free year of GrubHub+, which offers free delivery on orders over $12 and monthly savings of $9.99!

And, of course, you can book stays with The Hotel Collection. With eligible stays of 2 nights or more, you also get up to $100 property credit and a room upgrade, subject to availability.

The Amex Gold card has no foreign transaction fees, and no authorized user fee for up to 5 cards ($35 annual fee per card after that; rates & fees).

What Is the Amex Gold Card Dunkin’ Credit?

Yes, you’ve finally made it to the part about the doughnuts!

The Amex Gold card’s new Dunkin’ credit allows you to receive up to a $7 statement credit each month for purchases you’ve made at Dunkin’ using your card.

You don’t have to order just doughnuts, of course — Dunkin’ has dropped the “Donuts” from its name, after all. The statement credits can be used for Dunkin’ coffees, Dunkin’ frozen drinks, Dunkin’ wraps, Dunkin’ hash browns, Dunkin’ bagels — the brand has a much larger menu now than you probably remember (unless you live in New England). It’s really been a whole thing.

So go ahead and use your monthly credit of up to $7 on whatever not-a-doughnut menu item you want at Dunkin’ — we’re not here to yuck your yum. Just know we’ll just be using ours on a couple of Bavarian Kremes.

How To Enroll in the Amex Gold Card Dunkin’ Credit

So, no, you can’t just walk into your nearest Dunkin’ and expect to get $7 off your next statement. You have to proactively enroll in this card benefit first.

How To Use the Amex Gold Card Dunkin’ Credit

Once you’ve enrolled in the benefit, just make your purchase, and you’ll see the credit post in a few days, though Amex says you might have to wait 6 to 8 weeks.

Note that if you don’t use the statement credit one month, it won’t carry over to give you up to $14 in statement credits the next. This is a use-it-or-lose-it benefit.

Best Ways To Use the Amex Gold Card Dunkin’ Credit

  1. Doughnuts (filled)
  2. Doughnuts (glazed but not filled)
  3. Doughnuts (all other kinds)
  4. Frozen drinks on a hot day
  5. Coffee, if you like Dunkin’ coffee
  6. Breakfast sandwiches
  7. Bagels
  8. Coffee, if you don’t like Dunkin’ coffee

What Doesn’t Count Toward the Amex Gold Card Dunkin’ Credit?

Doughnuts from Krispy Kreme, Tim Horton’s, Hostess, Entenmann’s, Little Debbie, Tastykake, Dolly Madison, Starbucks, and so on do not count toward your Dunkin’ statement credit. The purchase must be made directly at a Dunkin’ location.

Is the Amex Gold Card Dunkin’ Credit Worth It?

If you used your Amex Gold card’s Dunkin’ statement credit religiously every month, you’d get $84 in value, which is a good chunk of the card’s annual membership fee.

That said, no matter how much you like doughnuts, your doctor would probably advise you to consume such sugary, fatty treats in moderation.

Final Thoughts

So, in case you couldn’t tell, we have a little bit of a crush on the Amex Gold card. It’s an amazing everyday card with valuable benefits, including this smashing new monthly Dunkin’ statement credit. Plus, it looks great in tight jeans.

Sure, it’s a pricier date than some with its annual fee, but the monthly Dunkin’ can help take the sting out of the annual payment — and possibly turn you into a Red Sox fan. So why not let Amex treat you to a free breakfast or 2 every month?
